POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the supervision of the Aquatics Director, the Head Swim Team Coach provides leadership in the preparation, planning, and operation of swim team practices at their assigned branch while coordinating with the other branch for competitive meets. Promotes and incorporates the YMCA's core values and mission into all aspects of the job and community.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Fulfill the Y's mission to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all.
  • Build effective, authentic relationships with swimmers and parents. Encourages member and parent support and involvement; identifies and recruits potential volunteers.
  • Give swimmers knowledge to understand and master strokes allowing for movement up through the swim team groups, and provide corrective feedback that will enhance swimmers' techniques.
  • Ensures the safety of swimmers at practice by following proper precautions and regulations.
  • Provides leadership and direction for assistant coaches and support volunteers. Prepares and plans schedules and achievement guidelines for practices.
  • Leads practices of the swim group(s) with care and excitement.
  • Encourages the involvement of all participants.
  • Coordinates with the other Head Swim Team Coaches and Aquatics Directors to plan swim meets.
  • Communicates program and meet information with parents and program participants.
  • Plans and coordinates branch team gatherings, end of season celebrations and other events.
  • Maintains records of attendance, registration, achievements, progress reports, skill development.
  • Represents the YMCA at meets and meetings.
  • Recruit, develop and maintain volunteers and parent groups/committees.
  • Performs any additional tasks assigned by leadership.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and human relations skills.
  • Swim Experience is required. American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification is required and can be provided by the YMCA after hire. YMCA Principles of Competitive Swimming and Diving is required after hire.
  • Prior coaching experience preferred. Previous experience with Team & Meet Manager Software.

Certification(s) and Requirements:
CPR and First Aid certification and Safety training required within 30 days of hire.
Y of the USA swim instructor certifications (Principles of competitive swimming & Diving)
completion within 30 days of hire (prior preferred). USA swimming instructor certifications (Coaching 101 & 201) completion within 30 days of hire(prior preferred).

Technical Skills and Knowledge:

  • Working knowledge of rules and regulations of the sport.
  • Must have knowledge of and be able to demonstrate correct swim techniques and strokes.
  • Have a general knowledge of anatomy, and exercise physiology, and kinesiology/ body kinematics.
  • Must have general understanding of child development, and physiology
  • Demonstrate commitment to the mission, cause of the YMCA, and uphold its values and ethics.
  • Ability to work effectively work with people of different backgrounds, abilities, opinions and perceptions.
  • Willingness and ability to be a mandated reporter for any signs or suspicion of child abuse and neglect. All employees are required to follow the child abuse and neglect reporting process: completion of Suspected Child Abuse/Neglect reporting form, calling children protective services (696-Kids) and notifying your immediate supervisor, branch executive, risk management and human resources department (s).
