The Cleveland Orchestra is seeking an Artistic Administrator who will be responsible for the artistic planning and implementation of Cleveland Orchestra concerts, including performances at Severance Music Center, Blossom Music Center, the Miami Residency, and domestic/international tours as required. Additionally, the Artistic Administrator is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Artistic Department and for the care and logistics of all guest artists. The Artistic Administrator will be widely viewed throughout the institution as a valuable source of information and counsel on all artistic matters.

Position responsibilities include the following:

ARTISTIC PLANNING / PROGRAMMING
  • Create and plan a variety of Cleveland Orchestra concerts and programs including the Blossom Festival, holiday concerts, recital series, select special events, and other performances as necessary.
  • Collaborate with the Vice President of Artistic Planning on other programming including subscription, tour, Miami Residency, and opera.
  • Plan non-classical programing, both with orchestra and without. Create strong relationships with non-classical producers to attract high-profile artists. Facilitate the creation of new shows to supplement existing repertoire.
  • Research new commission opportunities and manage the commissioning process – including The Cleveland Orchestra’s Composer in Residence.
  • Develop and foster productive relationships with artists, artist managers, orchestra members, staff colleagues, and community stakeholders to serve the artistic needs of The Cleveland Orchestra.
OPERATIONS / PRODUCTION MANAGEMENT
  • Coordinate auditions including casting for vocal projects, staff conductor openings, and future guest soloists for consideration.
  • Collaborate with the VP of Education and Community Programs to identify and manage education and community opportunities for visiting artists.
  • Assist with the management, development and administration of artist and composer residencies including liaising with relevant educational and cultural institutions.
  • Collaborate with Marketing, PR, and Philanthropy and Advancement teams to identify promotional opportunities for guest artists. Participate in such events as required.
  • Act as liaison with music publishers and composers. Coordinate the receipt of solicited and unsolicited scores, including cataloguing and follow-up.
  • Offer artistic hospitality as needed.
ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT
  • Administer department budget, prepare financial reports, and monitor department accounts. Serve as liaison with Finance Department and foreign guest artists regarding tax liabilities and IRS regulations.
  • Maintain all departmental records, including artists and repertoire, budgets, and fees.
  • Assist volunteer committees with arranging for guest artists appearances.
  • Attend, support, and participate in various artistic and/or operational planning meetings.
The successful candidate will meet the following qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in music or related field
  • 5+ years of similar experience in music environment required
  • Supervisory experience preferred
  • Strong familiarity with and passion for classical music, particularly symphonic repertoire, and working with performing artists
  • Superior interpersonal and communication skills with high level of empathy and emotional intelligence
  • Outstanding organizational skills and understanding of artistic administration
  • Demonstrated independent, mature judgment
  • Ability to consistently maintain a professional image and demeanor
  • Ability to work in a self-directed manner and efficiently under pressure
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365 and other databases such as Tessitura and Arts Vision
  • Must be able to travel between locations (Severance and Blossom Music Centers)
  • Occasional domestic and international travel is required for Miami, runout concerts, and international and domestic tours
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule that includes evenings and weekends and some holidays
