JOB DESCRIPTION Director of Nursing
IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR Chief Executive Officer
POSITIONS SUPERVISED Registered Nurses (RNs), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), Detoxification Technicians
QUALIFICATIONS/CREDENTIALS:
1. Current Ohio licensure as a Registered Nurse.
2. Associates Degree in Nursing, Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing preferred
3. Minimum 7 years of nursing experience
4. Minimum 3 years’ experience in a nursing supervisory role
5. Scope of nursing practice includes chemical dependency, dual diagnosis and psychiatric nursing
6. Familiarity with nurse recruitment and retention
7. Able to oversee infection control/management, etc. for the organization as a whole
8. Knowledge of Joint Commission standards and ability to prepare organization for all appropriate accreditation site visits.
9. Current CPR certification
BASIC FUNCTION:
The Director of Nursing (DON) provides leadership, oversight, and strategic direction for all nursing services within a detoxification and residential substance use disorder (SUD) treatment program. The DON is responsible for ensuring the delivery of safe, high-quality, evidence-based nursing care to clients experiencing substance withdrawal, co-occurring mental health disorders, and addiction-related medical conditions. This role oversees nursing operations, staffing, regulatory compliance, quality improvement initiatives, medication management, and interdisciplinary collaboration to support client recovery and treatment outcomes.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Review chart documentation for clarity, accuracy, and content and initiate corrective action as needed.
- Works in collaborations with Quality Assurance Committee
- Develop goals and objectives for all medical staff and programs, including daily census goals and AMA rate reduction.
- Promote a healthy environment through daily contact for each medical unit and throughout the organization, implementing a Team Problem Solving Procedure.
- Recruit, hire, orient, train, supervise, and evaluate nursing personnel.
- Foster a culture of accountability, professionalism, and compassionate care.
- Conduct performance evaluations and provide coaching and corrective action as needed.
- Identify educational needs and coordinate ongoing staff development programs.
- Maintain competency programs related to detoxification protocols, withdrawal assessment tools, emergency response, and behavioral health nursing.
- Ensure completion of reports to funding sources (i.e. ADAMHS Board and Lorrain County)
- Assist the agency’s Senior Staff in keeping organizational Policies & Procedures updated.
- Work cooperatively with other departments to accomplish organizational goals and objectives.
- Remain abreast of current nursing standards through written periodicals, by attending workshops and seminars.
- Ensure departmental compliance with Stella Maris’s policies and procedures, Joint Commission standards, and Ohio MHAS, as well as other accrediting bodies as required.
- Oversees response to all medical emergencies across the campus and educates staff as needed.
- Manages and creates schedules for all medical interns, PA students and PG2 residents, creating a well-rounded teaching experience in all levels of care.
- Completes an annual risk analysis for the agency related the education and the policies and procedures of infection control in collaboration with safety captain and quality assurance staff.
- Available to the medical staff after hours to address significant concerns and to provide directives and/or help solve problems.
- Works the Medical Director and the staff physicians to problem-solve issues related to patient care as identified by direct care staff.
- Needs to establish and maintain a working relationship with purchased services representatives (e.g., Pharmacy and Laboratory) to facilitate services and to address any issues that arise.
- Assist the CEO in developing, within budgeting constraints, yearly clinical service goals.
