The Automotive Finishes Division Staff Chemist position is responsible for developing innovative technologies & products and completing activities related to maintenance of business within the Aerospace segment. The incumbent will have opportunities to demonstrate leadership while providing support to internal customers such as marketing, sales, manufacturing, field technical service and quality as well as external customers (Aerospace OEM and MRO).

Job duties include contact with other employees and access confidential and proprietary information and/or other items of value, and such access may be supervised or unsupervised. This role will be located at Sherwin-Williams Morikis Global Technology Center located at 6745 Miller Road, Brecksville, OH 44141.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
• Must be legally authorized to work in the country for which you are applying for employment (without now or in the future needing sponsorship for employment work visa and/or permanent residence status).
• Bachelor’s degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Math field.
• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• 7 years of lab experience working with products and technologies including but not limited to, 2K Epoxy/urethane products/technology
• At least 3 years in coating specific industry experience with track record of technology deliveries.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• PhD in a Polymer Science or Chemistry Field of Study
• 5-7 years automotive/Aerospace coating experience
• Experience working with products and technologies including, but not limited to, solvent-based and waterborne technologies, monocoat and basecoat/clear coat products, solid shades and metallics over plastic substrates.
• Knowledge of and experience with DFSS (Design for Six Sigma) methodology and tool usage.


Travel Requirements: 10%

• Understand the challenges and needs for Aerospace coatings; work with internal technical teams and strategic vendors to explore and develop new technologies or products of commercial impact.
• Collaborate with cross functional teams and drive deliveries of key technical projects, accountable for providing timely and sound solutions to multiple technical challenges of moderate to difficult complexity.
• Perform material evaluations, problem-solving exercises, and formulation work in support of new-product development.
• Serve as technical expert in Aerospace products and technologies, provide technical training, respond to complex technical topics, and present/communicate results with broader teams.
• Design and execute experiments, provide clear and accurate analysis of results, draw conclusions based on observations and data, and make recommendations.
• Provide effective verbal and written feedback to communicate results and project status.
• Write technical reports of moderate to difficult complexity.
• Develop and capture intellectual property.
• Effectively communicate with project leaders, managers, customers, and suppliers, as well as utilize an internal network of resources.
• Demonstrate good laboratory practices, including notebook documentation.
• Perform laboratory work while maintaining safety as a top priority.
• Interact with Innovation teams and other division technical teams to leverage work.
• Participate in external customer interaction with field / sales personnel.
• Travel for manufacturing support, line trials and customer visits.
• Train or mentor new or lower-level chemists, technologists/technicians.
