Position Overview
Under the supervision of the Manager of Vision Rehabilitation, the Assistive Technology Specialist provides individualized training and support to clients who are blind or have low vision, empowering them to effectively use assistive technology for independence in daily living, education, and employment. This role includes hands-on instruction in tools such as screen readers, mobile accessibility features, magnification software, screen modifications, and wearable technologies. The specialist evaluates client needs, delivers practical skills-based training, and stays current with evolving accessibility tools and best practices.

Under the supervision of the Manager of Vision Rehabilitation, the Assistive Technology Specialist provides individualized training and support to clients who are blind or have low vision, empowering them to effectively use assistive technology for independence in daily living, education, and employment. This role includes hands-on instruction in tools such as screen readers, mobile accessibility features, magnification software, screen modifications, and wearable technologies. The specialist evaluates client needs, delivers practical skills-based training, and stays current with evolving accessibility tools and best practices.
Essential functions:
- Provides assistive/accessible technology evaluation/assessment, training, and support at CSC’s offices, client’s home, work or elsewhere in the community
- Travels to and from appointments with employers, stakeholders, and clients
- Has ability to use and input into software applications
- Provides program support as needed to department programs and activities
- Provides client-centered services
- Provides direct service to clients and families
- Has excellent communication and conduct with stakeholders
- Maintains physical requirements of position
- Meets agency standards for privacy and confidentiality
- Conducts group and individual instruction, and evaluation, in adaptive technology and software applications
- Completes required documentation and reports accurately and within expected timeframes
- Helps CSC IT department maintain training equipment and software in good working order
- Provide in-office and remote desktop support and training for employees who use a variety of assistive technology (JAWS, Fusion, ZoomText, Narrator, Voiceover, etc.).
- Responds to helpdesk tickets for technical support and training with expectation to take ownership and responsibility for assigned tickets.
- Assess the accessibility of software applications.
- Orient new employee to using JAWS with ClientCare.
- Train employees to use and access: Teams to host meetings or to chat, remote desktop & VPN, Microsoft Authenticator on iPhone and Android web versions of Outlook, and Paycor.
- Access employee benefits survey for accessibility barriers.
- Confirm proper installation of assistive technology.
- Support reasonable accommodations mandated by HR.
- Serve as a member of an interdisciplinary team and participate in meetings and other required activities.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Excellent and effective communication skills (verbal and written).
- Knowledge of community resources.
- Knowledge of common eye conditions.
- Knowledge of the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act is helpful.
- Must possess the ability to perform well in both a collaborative, team environment and independently.
- Superb organizational skills.
- Effective public speaking skills.
- Proficient computer literacy.
- Ability to relate well to staff, clients, volunteers and customers.
- Ability to work with people with disabilities and with visual impairments.
- Knowledge of current versions of Windows and Microsoft Office.
- Knowledge and ability to learn various technology applications and adaptive technology.
- Knowledge and ability to implement best practice standards regarding various technological applications, adaptive technology, and adult learning concepts.
- Ability to evaluate and instruct in the use of adaptive technology.
- Ability to create and develop curriculum and use the off-the-shelf curriculum as needed.
- Ability to learn new skills as needed.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proven production of timely plans and reports.
Qualifications:
- Two years in adaptive technology/computer-related technical position supporting people who are blind and visually impaired.
- Knowledge of Apple iOS for desktop, tablet, and phones is preferred
- Knowledge of accessibility software such as, but not limited to, JAWS, ZoomText, Dragon Naturally Speaking, VoiceOver, TalkBack is preferred.
- High School Diploma.
- Assistive Technology certification or licensure is not required but preferred.
